Forest Fire

Forest Fire

“Only you can prevent forest fires.”  The famous saying of Smokey the Bear has been spoken for decades.  While forest fire prevention lies with the individual, fighting forest fires is an entirely different matter.  Each year, news of forest fires burning more than 50,000 acres is broadcast on TV.  These large fires are extremely difficult to fight, requiring millions of dollars of resources and thousands of people and they often aren’t extinguished until the rain comes.

The key to fighting forest fires is early detection and properly locating them so that fire crews can respond quickly and effectively to stop the fire while it is small.  The best way to do this is to use smart fire towers, sensors distributed throughout the forest with a cellular modem.  When multiple sensors detect the presence of the fire, it can be accurately triangulated and a crew sent out to respond accordingly.  However, in the forest, solar is not a viable energy source because the trees block the sunlight.  Having to change batteries across thousands of sensors is extremely difficult, especially when many of them are in the mountains.

Our generator is the perfect solution for this because it doesn’t require direct sunlight to operate–in fact, it doesn’t  require sunlight at all.  It is also durable enough that if it were accidentally (or intentionally) shot by a hunter, it would continue detecting forest fires for years to come.  The 25 year maintenance free service life also makes it perfect for forest fire detection because the sensor can simply be deployed and spend an entire lifetime protecting the forest lands.
